Hector is a clinical social worker and certified CYC in private practice in Maine. He is an adjunct faculty with the University of Maine at Augusta, a senior trainer for the Academy of Competent Youth Work, and an approved trainer for Maine Roads to Quality (MRTQ). He offers a wide range of training both independently and through the Academy. Hector has been in the CYC field for over 40 years. He is the treasurer of the Association of Child and Youth Care Practice (ACYCP).
Hector began work as a child care worker in residential treatment centers, later transitioning to psychiatric hospital settings. This prepared him to understand the intensity and demands of working in a therapeutic milieu. As he later moved into supervisory, management, administrative, and consultative positions he brought with him the knowledge of the challenges that face practitioners as they discover ways to improve their effectiveness, stamina, and fulfillment. Throughout these years he has intermittently maintained a clinical practice primarily working with young people with varying mental health issues and degrees of severity.
Over his career, Hector has worked in a wide range of settings including therapeutic recreation, early childhood education, therapeutic foster care, community mental health, and national social service corporations. He has consulted in risk management, quality assurance, and new program start-ups. This included designing, implementing, monitoring, and maintaining programs for diverse populations as well as recruiting, training, & retention of competent staff.
